Most geodes develop in small hollow burrows within the earth.
Over time mineral rich waters seep into the burrows allowing the minerals to harden around small pieces of limestone or anhydrite. Thus forming the outer crust of geodes.
The crystal production that occurs within a geode depends on the amount of moisture trapped inside, various chemicals and minerals deposited and the amount of pressure applied to the geode. If the mix is right crystals will grow. The crystals build and grow inward towards the center filling the geode out. This can take millions of years and many geodes have been estimated to be over 250 Million years old.
Most geodes are never completely filled out. Geodes that are completely filled out are called nodules

Geodes can also develop within bubbles of volcanic rock. Minerals get trapped within the cavities deposited by steam and the various minerals harden and typically form around limestone.
Agate Geodes typically develop with ovular shape. They are sliced open to reveal the Crystal formation
